IBM Launches Military AI to Boost Decision-Making

The IBM Defense Model, a specially created AI model intended to provide trustworthy intelligence for defense and national security, has been made generally available by IBM. The IBM Defense Model was created in collaboration with Janes, a top supplier of open-source defense intelligence.

It empowers agencies to make decisions quickly, accurately, and confidently in secure, mission-critical environments by combining IBM’s enterprise-grade AI technology with Janes domain-specific data.

The IBM Defense Model is geared for defense-specific tasks and deployable in air-gapped, classified, and edge environments, in contrast to general-purpose large language models. The model is in line with IBM’s emphasis on smaller, open-source, fit-for-purpose AI models and datasets that can produce remarkable value and spur innovation.

These models and datasets are created and refined for domains and use cases. Planning, reporting, and strategy are supported by the solution, which is offered through IBM Watsonx.ai and is based on IBM’s Granite foundation models.

“Defense organizations need AI they can trust – solutions that deliver accurate insights without compromising security or ethics,”

said Vanessa Hunt, General Manager, Technology, U.S. Federal Market for IBM.

“The IBM Defense Model provides a fit-for-purpose capability that accelerates mission planning and enhances operational readiness, while reinforcing IBM’s commitment to responsible AI.”

“Our collaboration with IBM brings together Janes trusted defense intelligence and IBM’s advanced AI capabilities,”

said Blake Bartlett, CEO for Janes.

“This model helps to ensure defense organizations can access timely, relevant insights in secured environments, helping them make informed decisions with confidence.”
