Home Depot Adds AI Feature to Speed Up Contractor Projects

Home Depot has rolled out a new artificial intelligence tool designed to make it easier for professional contractors by speeding up the process of creating project material lists.

The feature, called Material List Builder AI, is part of Home Depot’s Project Planning platform. It helps builders, remodelers, and trade professionals create detailed lists of required materials in just minutes, rather than hours.

Traditionally, building a material list has been a slow and manual task. Contractors often need to search across different systems, compare prices, and re-enter information into spreadsheets, which can lead to mistakes, delays, and higher costs. Home Depot says the new AI tool is designed to remove much of that friction.

With Material List Builder AI, contractors can describe their project in plain language, speak details using voice input, upload existing documents, or start from templates for common jobs. The system then automatically creates a structured list of materials, organized by project phase.

Contractors can review and edit the list before finalizing it. Once approved, Home Depot suggests products for each section based on the contractor’s pricing preferences and current inventory.

Materials can be ordered directly through Home Depot, and the lists are saved for future use on similar projects.

The tool is available at no additional cost to members of Pro Xtra, Home Depot’s loyalty program for professionals, and is fully integrated into the company’s broader digital project planning tools.

The launch highlights Home Depot’s ongoing push to support professional customers, who make up a significant portion of its business.

By adding synchronized AI to planning and purchasing workflows, Home Depot is reinforcing the goal of helping contractors work faster, reduce errors, and manage projects more efficiently using smarter digital tools.
